iPad App Development at Cambria

Cambria is a Silicon Valley based custom software development company who has weathered 28 years of amazing software change and has kept up with every change. We develop iPad apps, and have done since the iPad was introduced. The short message of this page is this: If you need an iPad (or iPad/iPhone) app developed we can do it and if you think 28 years in this business is a good enough reference to press the Contact Us link then do it and tell us what is on your mind. You will get a prompt straight forward reply. I should add that despite our Silicon Valley history we do all our mobile development offshore at our office in Manila in the Philippines. This enables us to give competitive prices worldwide and our team in Manila is superb.

iPad App Development and iPad Web Development at Cambria

Cambria began developing iPad App as soon as Apple released its software development kit for iPad. This has the same operating system in use for the iPhone, iPod and other Apple devices so we were ready as soon as the iPad itself was ready. We have also been creating websites and web applications since the 1990s so it was natural to move some of these skills to the iPad world as well.

Right away we are into three fundamentally different approaches and if you are interested in having Cambria develop an application for you we need to know what we are to do. The possibilities can be summarized as follows:

  • Adapt your current Website to the touch screen environment of the iPad
  • Create a Web Application specifically for the iPad
  • Create an iPad App in capital letters – that is a computer program to run on the iPad.

Adapt your website for use on the iPad

There are complaints about how convenient it is to browse the web using an iPad and one recent article even accuses Apple of deliberately making it so for their own purposes! However, most websites look fine on the iPad although they might benefit from design changes to make the touch screen environment a little more convenient. In most cases this is not really needed unless it makes use of Flash as an important element in the site. In this case the Client may wish either to get rid of the flash or detect the mobile device and deliver alternative or converted content.

If you are thinking of modifying a site to display on an iPad you may also be considering the more challenging task of creating a modified site to display on the much smaller screens of an iPhone and other mobile devices. This starts to get into a question of a multiplicity of sites and perhaps you need three versions. This can be done. Some sites have opted to have two versions – a mobile version for any mobile device and the full screen version for the computer. If the user is an iPad and is directed to a dumbed down mobile version intended for tiny screens it is a sure way to annoy an iPad user and the option should always be given to allow the iPad to view the full screen version. Most iPad users would prefer the full screen version of the site.

Develop from Scratch: Mobile Native App versus Mobile Web App

A web app developed for the iPad will likely make use of HTML5, JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), tools with which web programmers are familiar. These apps will be more easily developed and will cost less. And they may be good enough. You have to decide whether the possibility of greater performance is actually there and moreover whether it is important. A native app is always more complicated to write and will, as a consequence, be more expensive. See here for a fuller discussion of this important topic.

Another factor to consider is the Apple Store. If you wish to market your native app you will need to publish it to the app store. Apple has strict rules for accepting apps into the store and being careful to code for these will push the price up further. Of course if the app is for your own internal use this does not matter. For a Mobile Web App on the other hand there is no need to deal with the Apple Store. Put it up and it will be out there for all to see.

Cambria will assist the Client during the entire development lifecycle and will be available for support when needed in the future as we have been during the last 28 years for more traditional software applications.

Sample Mobile Programming Projects

  • Reflex. It is an application primarily used for research in evaluating emerging for touch devices. It serves as interface prototype for actuators to simulate the real sound and feel of an object or device.

  • AromaPro for Sahra. It is a spa application that determines and recommends a set of product to a client based on his/her personality, mind and soul condition. It’s a great example of an application that fuse touch and technology to deliver the ultimate customer experience.

  • Real Estate Back Of The Envelope. It is a real estate calculator and analysis tool for commercial investors and agents. It allows you to calculate property values and pro forma investment returns for office, residential, retail, industrial and hotel. It calculates for the IRR , cash flow and sensitivity graphs.

  • "It was so nice working with you too! I have more plans for the ipad application and will be in touch with you probably after the new year to discuss this with you."
